Taming the Twin: Single-Engine Operations
Whether you’re new to multiengine flying or multiengine rated but rusty, become a better, safer pilot with the AOPA Air Safety Institute’s Taming the Twin video series. These videos, in collaboration with Sporty’s, cover the fundamentals that are key to mastering multiengine flying.
Flying a multiengine airplane when one engine has failed requires a deep understanding of how to maintain aircraft control and performance. Single-Engine Operations examines the relationship between the airplane’s controllability and performance, and why controllability is paramount for safety during single-engine operations.
The series’ remaining videos are scheduled to be released one at a time in the upcoming months.

I assume every pilot has a plan for this on takeoff, with a general plan in several circumstances when experiencing an engine failure? why the insistence on making the runway? any open field of grass in a mostly wide open grassy area that is many airports is certainly better than a stall into the ground....

A minor yet significant tidbit: The controller should have corrected the Cirrus when he said "cleared for the intercept". In reality, he'd been cleared for the ILS approach to 21. That might have reinforced his situational awareness and kept him from blowing through the localizer. Who knows.

I wonder how much fatigue played a role in this. They had done over five hours of flying, spent 4 hours on the ground, and had potentially several hours to get to Des Moines. I don't make the best decisions after five hours in a car followed by needing to get back in the car a few hours later. With such unfavorable density altitude in the mountains, it would have been wiser to spend the night in Aspen and leave early morning with a clear head and cooler temperatures.

This is multiple controller F ups, she stayed calm the whole time, the tower controllers needed to talk to the approach controller to make space to fit her in, or hand her off to approach . Eventually she probably became frustrated and overwhelmed which lead to a critical mistake.

So pleased that he didn’t target fixate on the runway because the M11 motorway in his path is in a considerable cutting on the approach line to Duxford that would have given a very different outcome. Excellent dynamic risk assessments and the best possible outcome. Any landing that you walk away from is a good’n!

High density altitude is a very strange name for what is a low density atmospheric condition. Terminology is important. I suppose that the wind sock was a missed clue to the danger ahead. Real observation trumping historic reports and the vagaries of forecast. There but for the grace of God…

Complacency has no place in the air or at sea which is more my environment. We fly or float solely because of our geometry. Minor variations of our geometry and we cease to do either. Both environments are capable of editing our carefully constructed geometry on a whim. 😢

One thing id like to note/clarify, i dont know what all operators do but one thing of note and something ive seen not only done by the flight school where I got my PPL but with the CAP as well, in Cessna 152s 172s and 182s is to lower the flaps to full during the preflight and then during either the engine start or before taxi checklist to retract them. Him being a new pilot, he could have missed this step and forgotten to raise them. When i was a student pilot on the 152 i had a similar oversight where i missed that item during the engine start checklist and my CFI had to call out that i had not retracted the flaps from full down configuration. That put a mental reminder in my head and now i always tripple check and verify flaps are up. Seeing he was new to the cessna and had likely not recieved much instruction i can unfortunately understand how the mistake could have been made.

Reminiscent of the old film with David Niven where the angel forgot to collect the pilot after he crashed his plane so he survived. The problem with exhaust heat exchangers is that they tend to smell exhausty like even when they’re not leaking. The smell of very hot steel makes you used to the smell of exhaust such that you could easily miss a slow developing leak path. Could this be the luckiest man alive.

Just like glider pilots have to understand, it's very easy to lose altitude, but can be very challenging to gain it back. If you have partial power loss, keep altitude high for as long as you can hold it. A slip with full flaps will drop you pretty quick. Even more so in a bank.

Control and performance. Got it. So why are most twins so difficult to control and suffer such terrible performance in engine out scenarios? I know the physical, scientific reasons. I’m more concerned with how so many twins achieved certification when they are, in practice, barely flyable with one engine inop. I consider this a significant failure of the aircraft certification process, and I don’t think many twins would pass certification these days. I wish there had been more exploration of centerline thrust designs and other technologies to alleviate these problems.

Funny that you used a Barron. Unrecoverable from a VMC induced spin when equipped with VG's. VG's on a Barron will kill you. You can do everything right in a Barron and still die. Unless you drill into a light twin pilots head that VMC is the speed you see just before the crash people will die. Current Multi engine training is a disaster. And the stats prove it. You can safely operate a light twin but not the way the Feds want. When have you seen anybody from the government get anything right?

I get what you’re saying… don’t let ATC take over flying. But in that case tell them what your plan is and what you need. “N1234WY declaring a partial power loss emergency. I need direct the field and 4000 feet until 2 miles out.” A lot less talking and now the controller can clear out other traffic.
